OIA Open Football Playoffs Are At Farrington This Weekend; D-I, D-II Title Games Set

The OIA Open Division football semifinals will be held at Farrington High School’s Skippa Diaz Stadium on Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m., league football coordinator Harold Tanaka told Bedrock Sports Hawaii on Tuesday.

Three of the four semifinalists are in Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s statewide Top 10. And three teams out of the four will make it to the Open state tourney that starts Dec. 17.

Campbell’s Chauncee Lopez ran into a Kahuku brick wall last Saturday in the Red Raiders’ 49-23 win, including Liona Lefau (10) and Leonard Ah You (12). Both teams play in the OIA semifinals at Farrington this weekend.

On Friday, Waianae (3-3) takes on No. 1 Kahuku (6-0), and then on Saturday, No. 5 Campbell (4-2) challenges No. 3 Mililani (4-1). The following week at sites to be determined, the winners play for the league title and the losers square off for that important final state berth.

OIA Division I and II Combatants Set

The OIA Division I and II regular seasons are coming to an end and the slots for the championship games have been filled.

In the D-I championship game, Aiea (3-1) will visit Moanalua (4-1) on Saturday, Dec. 11. Game time will be 6 p.m.

Tanaka said there might be a slight scheduling change in D-I.

In the D-II title game, Kaiser (6-0) and Radford (6-1) have clinched spots, and the game will.be held at the higher seed on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m.

Tanaka added that the D-II game might move to Friday, Dec. 17, in order to give the winning team extra time to prepare for the D-II state tourney that starts Wednesday, Dec. 22.

The Cougars need one more win to clinch the D-II regular-season title and the home site for the championship game against the Rams.

Ka’u Gets Final Spot In BIIF D-II Playoffs

Bedrock Sports Hawaii is in the process of finding out how Ka’u clinched the final spot in the BIIF D-II playoffs. The Trojans finished in a regular-season tie for fourth place with Pahoa and Kohala at 1-4.

ScoringLive.com lists Ka’u playing as the fourth seed in the BIIF D-II semifinals Saturday, with the Trojans visiting regular-season champion and top seed Hawaii Prep (5-0) at 2 p.m. The best guess at this point is that Ka’u won a coin flip for that final playoff spot.

In the other semifinal Saturday, Honokaa (3-2) visits Kamehameha-Hawaii (4-1) at 5 p.m.

Two State Berths Are On The Line Friday

So far, only four teams have clinched the 12 possible state berths (four teams in each of the three divisions) — ILH champion and No. 2 Saint Louis (5-3) in the Open, ILH champion and No. 8 ‘Iolani (9-0) and MIL champion and No. 7 Lahainaluna (5-0) in Division I, and KIF champion and No. 9 Kapaa (5-0) in Division II.

One or two state berths will be locked up this weekend.

The winner of Friday’s BIIF Division I championship game — Hilo (4-1) at No. 6 Konawaena (5-0) — qualifies for states.

On Maui, Kamehameha-Maui (2-2) will get into the D-II state tournament if it beats King Kekaulike (0-4) on Friday. If Na Alii win, the MIL D-II title and state berth will be determined with one more game between the two teams on the following Friday.
