NBC Lauds Punahou: ‘All That Distinction In One Place’; Bedrock Compiles List Of Buffanblu Olympians

Barry, ‘Riss, Buster and Manti are just a few of Punahou’s famous alumni.

And, by Bedrock Sports Hawaii’s count, the list of former Buffanblu athletes who have gone on to compete at the Olympics stands at 24. Among the 24 are ‘Riss (Carissa Moore) and Buster (Crabbe), but not the other two mentioned above (President Barack Obama and Manti Te’0).

Ahhh, there’s the catch, though. These lists are only as good as the reporter and his sources. My guess is that there are more names that could go on this list. I could have called Mr. Jeff Meister, an athletic director at Punahou, to see if there is a definitive list somewhere.

Actually, I am actually going to make that call right now — after this story posts. In the old days, working at the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, I would have made the call first before ever writing a word about it, but now that I run my own website, I can wait and get this stuff out on this post before the so-called “definitive” list comes in. If it does, I will be sure to update things here.

According to a great video that you can find at NBCOlympics.com, there are more than 30 who attended Punahou and then competed at the Olympics. But, they don’t list them all. Here is that NBC video: WATCH — Hawaii Prep School Breeds Olympians And U.S. President.

So, Bedrock has begun the process to get all the names and their Olympics accomplishments in one place.

First, Bedrock’s list of 24, (27 names, including three with asterisks due to an athlete qualifying for the Olympics but not competing) follows.

Note: The following list shows that the Buffanblu athletes have combined to win 13 medals — four gold, six silver and three bronze. Of the 27 names, 21 also competed in college at the following schools — UCLA (4), Stanford (3), USC (3), Long Beach State (2), UC Irvine (2), BYU (1), Cornell (1), Hawaii (1) Indiana (1).Minnesota (1), Ohio State (1), and Washington (1).
