ILH Track And Field Athletes Shift Into High Gear At League Championships; Punahou Sweeps Team Titles

—–

No records were broken at the ILH Track and Field Championships at Kamehameha on Wednesday and Friday, but that doesn’t mean you should take any of these private school athletes lightly.

The ILH’s top guns kicked it into high gear, recording the top statewide marks in nine events.

Perhaps the top overall performance was turned in by PAC-5 senior Olivia Reed. She won the 100-meter dash in 12.35 seconds, the 200 in 25.86 and she went 18 feet, 1.25 inches to take the long jump. The 100 and long jump marks are Hawaii’s best so far in 2022.

“It’s a blessing,” Reed said about her great finishes. “I just had to stick to what I practice and just do what I know how to do. I feel like states will be a good competition. I went my freshman year. And it will also be a fun time.”

Reed is headed to the U.S. Military Academy West Point next year, where she plans to walk on to the track and field team.

PAC-5’s Olivia Reed earned wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump.

The other top Hawaii marks so far in 2022 were turned in by:

>> Hawaii Baptist Academy junior Jordy Davenport, 59.26 in the 400

>> Punahou junior Kainoa Ronqulio, 50.07 in the 400

>> Kamehameha junior Tatum Moku, 15.32 in the 100 hurdles

>> Punahou senior Lev Van Delden , 13-10 in the pole vault

>> Saint Louis’ Yosei Takahashi, Kanoa Monteilh, Nick Delgadillo and Trech Kekahuna, 43.19 in the 4×100 relay

>> Punahou’s Gabby Smith, Kelsey Ann Sato, Vani Salanoa and Hannah Miura, 49.66 in the 4×100 relay

>> Punahou’s Kainoa Ronquilio, Maximillian Even, Sean Connell and Noa Wong, 3:26.59 in the 4×400 relay

“I was kind of super nervous coming into this,” Davenport said after her win in the 400. “I was sitting in Lane 3 and had all my major competitors on the outside lanes so I was able to pace with them. My goal this year was to break 60.”

Hawaii Baptist Academy’s Jordy Davenport is the ILH 400-meter champion.

Davenport’s 59.26 was a shade better than the 59.95 turned in by Punahou’s Vani Salanoa in the prelims.

Numerous Multiple-Event Winners

Ronqulio and Moku were Among the multiple-event winners.

Aside from his victory in the 400 and as part of the 4×400 relay, Ronquilio captured the 200 (23.30).

Right before her win in the 100 hurdles, Moku attempted to break the meet record of 12-5 in the pole vault. She looked in great form on three attempts at 12-6, but clipped the bar each time. Her personal best is 12-7 and she’ll be trying to break the state meet record of 13-0 next weekend.

Other multiple event ILH champions are:

>> Saint Louis junior Trech Kekahuna, 11.04 in the 100 (in addition to the 4x-100 relay win)

>> Mid-Pacific senior Parker Wagnild, 4:10.84 in the 1,500 and 9:08.21 in the 3,000

>> Punahou junior John-Keawe Sagapolutele, 50-5 in the shot put and 156-9 in the discus

>> Punahou junior Vani Salanoa, 35-11.25 in the triple jump (in addition to the 4×100 relay win)

Mid-Pacific’s Parker Wagnild won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter ILH titles.

“it’s been a great season so far,” Wagnild said. “I’ve been very happy with it. The coaches have been very helpful with training. It was a fun race. I took it out hard and held from there and it’s just a great time and I want to keep the momentum going forward in my senior season. All in all, I’m happy to be competing with a lot of guys I’ve spent the last four years with. We’ve been making each other better. And I want to definitely thank my family for their support.”

Kekhuna, meanwhile, is looking forward to the steep competition in the sprints at states at Kamehameha next Friday and Saturday.

“It’s only ILH, mot states, though, but this victory feels good,” Kekahuna said. “Gotta keep pushing. It’s all in God’s hands. He takes me where I want to go.”

One of Kekahuna’s competitors at states will be Hawaii Baptist Academy junior Shane Kawakami-Williams, who had the top times in the 100 (11.18) and 200 (23.08) preliminaries Wednesday but was ill and did not run Friday.

Saint Louis’ Trech Kekahuna won the 100 and was part of the winning 4×100 relay team at the ILH Track and Field Championships.

Punahou’s Balen Rigg Is Out To Beat His Grandfather

Punahou senior Balen Rigg hit 5-11 to win the high jump, but he missed on three attempts at 6-2. A week ago, Rigg leaped 6-03.5 for Hawaii’s highest mark in 2022 so far.

“Air pumps, everything, I was all psyched,” Rigg said when he hit the 6-03.5. “Today, wet conditions, I got the win but not my PR. I think I have the ability to get 6-4 or 6-5.”

Rigg is out to top his PR at states and he’s got some extra incentive. His grandfather is longtime Punahou assistant coach and former Buffanblu high jumper Doug Kilpatrick.

“My grandpa did 6-03.75 as his record,” Rigg said. “He wants me to beat his record and I really want to beat his record as well.”

The Punahou boys (193.5 points) and girls (195) were the team winners. ‘Iolani’s boys (98) and girls (119.5) took second place, with the Saint Louis boys (86.5) and Kamehameha girls (69) earning third.
